An Exceptionally Rare Museum-Grade Pair of Faux Bamboo Bedside Cabinets by Howard & Sons Circa 1900

An extraordinary and highly sought-after matching pair of late Victorian Aesthetic Movement bedside cabinets by the legendary London workshop, Howard & Sons. Globally celebrated for their peerless country-house upholstered seating, case furniture from Howard & Sons’ bespoke cabinet-making division represents the absolute pinnacle of English craftsmanship, produced on a strictly limited, custom-commission basis.

This striking duo perfectly captures the late 19th-century British fascination with the Anglo-Japanese aesthetic. The masterfully turned faux-bamboo structural frameworks and ring-turned mouldings are executed in dense, solid ash, chosen by the firm's elite craftsmen for its crisp, durable turning qualities. The drawer fronts and side panels showcase magnificent, richly figured panels of premium pitch pine, displaying a dramatic, undulating grain and a deep, warm honey-amber patina.

Each cabinet is crowned with a white Carrara marble top, adding a cool, neoclassical elegance that beautifully contrasts the warmth of the native timber. The cabinets feature two graduated drawers retaining their original turned wooden knobs and smooth-running interior linings.

Crucially, the suite is authenticated by the definitive workshop hallmarks deeply die-stamped into the raw wood drawer edge of the primary cabinet: HOWARD & SONS and BERNERS ST. This singular drawer marking aligns perfectly with standard turn-of-the-century practice at the Berners Street workshop, where a single "masterpiece" stamp sufficed to hallmark an entire bespoke commission.

Reflecting the elite craftsmanship of the workshop, the cabinets feature sophisticated floating back panels that slot into precision-routed channels. This traditional joinery allows for natural wood movement and ensures the pieces have remained structurally square for over a century. The pair stands on their original, smooth-rolling brass castors, providing both functional elegance and protecting the delicate turned leg terminals.

Finding a completely intact, unbroken pair of bedside chests from this scarce cabinet line, retaining their hardware, and structural integrity, is a remarkable trade survival, suited for the finest residential interiors or an institutional collection.

Excellent country-house condition throughout. The ash and pitch pine possess a magnificent, authentic patina with only honest, minor signs of age-appropriate wear. The Carrara marble tops are free of structural cracks or heavy staining. 

The drawers operate smoothly with a crisp, legible maker stamp. One drawer knob exhibits a historic, minor edge chip that is entirely consistent with age and long-term utility, preserving the prized historical integrity of the piece. The original floating backboards and all eight brass castors are fully intact and functional.

These are offered in untouched country house condition, the marble tops are later replacements.
